Riverbanks Zoo's Halloween Spook-Tacular Opens for Three-Week Run

[Columbia, SC] - Kids will need more than one costume to cover Riverbanks Zoo's 10-night trick-or-treating extravaganza, Boo at the Zoo, which starts tomorrow evening - Friday, October 14 at 6 p.m.

"The park is looking great," said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. "Haystacks, pumpkins and scarecrows are everywhere, miniature houses are brimming with candy for trick-or-treaters, and volunteers are poised to make Boo at the Zoo a memorable experience for every child that walks through our gates."

Volunteers will distribute over 200,000 pieces of candy over the next three weekends as costumed kids take over the Zoo from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening. Kids in costume will visit 20 trick-or-treating stations scattered throughout the Zoo.

Candy may be dandy but there are plenty of other spooky activities for kids of all ages. Children will enter the park through the BatZ and BonZ Castle and can traipse past the Endangered Species Graveyard as they make their way to the Zombie Zone and Boo's Bat Cave. In Riverbanks' Palmetto Plaza, Mummy's Eeky-Freaky DJ Dance Party will be playing terrifying tunes kids can groove to and the lights Vortex will vex their vision.

For small additional charges, kids can take a ride on the Hobgoblin Express through the Zoo's dark and creepy back alleys and check out the 3-D Halloween movie, Haunted House. Once they slip on their 3-D glasses, kids will sneak through a haunted house from the perspective of a cat. Kids who make it through the 13-minute film are in for a surprise ending that'll leave them wide-eyed.

Boo at the Zoo will run from 6 to 9 p.m. October 14-16, 21-23 and 27-30. Tickets are $5 for Society members and $7 for the general public, ages three through adult. Parents who bring kids ages two and under don't have to worry about paying admission for their tykes unless their toddlers want to trick-or-treat. Parents can help kids prepare for a good time by leaving their homemade trick-or-treat bags at home. Each paying child will receive a Boo bag - the Zoo's official candy-collecting bag - sponsored by Palmetto Pride.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.riverbanks.org, by phone at 803.779.8717 or in person at the gate. Advance tickets are recommended for families who want to avoid the lines.
