March for Meals 5K Run and Walk Lets Participants Enjoy Zoo and Garden

[Columbia, SC] - For the third year, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden will be transformed into an early morning runner's course to benefit Meals on Wheels, a nonprofit administered through Senior Resources that delivers meals to homebound senior citizens.

"This has become such a popular run," said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, "in large part because of the unique setting. Folks are used to downtown districts closing roads and utilizing trails for charity runs, but few participants have had the opportunity to run past elephants and zebras."

This year's course takes runners up into Riverbanks Botanical Garden before they cross back over Riverbanks' Saluda River foot bridge and along the perimeter of the Zoo. Individuals and families who choose to walk the course will meander through the interior of the Zoo, completing a circuit that hits many of the Zoo's highlights.

Last year, 550 people participated in the run and walk, raising over $41,000 for the Meals on Wheels program. In 2004, the event was named the Top Fundraising Event in the Nation by the Meals on Wheels Association of America. Mayor Bob Coble and Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott have lent their support this year.

This year's race starts at 7:30am with event day registration beginning at 6:15am. Registration is $20 for adult runners, $15 for adult walkers and $10 for children 12 and under through February 15. Late registrants will pay $25 to run and $20 to walk if they register between February 16 and March 3, and on the day of the race, registration bumps up to $30 for both runners & walkers. Registration fees include a t-shirt (while supplies last) and a one-day pass to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

To register for the race or to receive more information, contact Senior Resources at 803.252.7734 or visit www.seniorresourcesinc.org.
