[Columbia, SC] - Riverbanks Botanical Garden will host its annual Plant Sale this Saturday from 9:00am to 2:00pm in the Garden's Growing Center, offering the public fifty species of plants that have grown successfully at Riverbanks.
"All of these plants grow in our gardens and can be difficult to locate elsewhere," said Melodie Scott-Leach, director of horticulture. "In many cases, we've cultivated them over years, honing in on the particular species that do the best in our climate."
A large variety of sun and shade plants will be available with a good mix of annuals and perennials. Rose lovers will ogle over the Garden's selection of Antique Roses - a plant that's become somewhat of a specialty at Riverbanks.
One of the most unusual plants available will be Remusatia vivipara, a small elephant ear that grows well in shade. Elephant ears in general are always popular sellers, and this year Riverbanks will be offering three species.
More plants that are sure to impress are the ornamental pepper annuals Riverbanks grew heavily in the summer of 2004 and 2005. The brightly colored fruit last all summer and throw a shock of color into any garden.
"This is a great time to start planting. Lots of people get motivated this time of year. The soil's warming up and the days are getting longer. All the bulbs you planted this winter should be just about finished blooming," Scott-Leach said.
Most plants will range in the $5 to $10 range with proceeds benefiting Riverbanks Botanical Garden. People who are set on particular plants should arrive early. For more information call 803.779.8717 or visit www.riverbanks.org.
