[Columbia, SC] - Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has extended the registration deadline for Saturday night’s annual fundraising gala. Those interested in attending the 8th annual ZOOfari can call 803.779.8717, ext. 1601 to purchase tickets. This year’s event, themed
A Journey Through Africa, takes place on October 7 at Riverbanks from 7:00 to 11:00pm.
“Each year Riverbanks staff selects a playful and interactive theme for the evening. The theme, ‘A Journey Through Africa,’ reflects all aspects of this year’s annual fundraising gala,” said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. “This year’s ZOOfari promises to be an evening to remember.”
To kick off the journey, guests are issued a passport as they enter through the gate. The document is designed to guide them throughout the Zoo as they enjoy a variety of exotic and themed food stations, live music by the ADANDE African Dance Company and a silent and live auction.
Riverbanks Executive Chef Marcus Coleman has prepared a menu that will satisfy all of your wildest cravings. To complement the African theme, Chef Coleman has selected cuisine that represents four distinct regions of the vast continent of Africa. Entrees representing North, South, East and West Africa will boast exotic spices and herbs indicative of each particular African region. Delicacies include Peppered Grouper, Moroccan Chicken Tangine, and the famous West African dish, Jolof Rice.
This year’s proceeds from ticket sales, donations, auction items and additional sponsorships will be used to build an African Discovery Center. The center will serve to further educate and increase awareness of regional and international conservation efforts. Rare auction items include an opportunity to feature your child or grandchild on the cover of Riverbanks magazine, a candlelight dinner surrounded by graceful giraffes, and personal and interactive behind-the-scenes opportunities throughout the Zoo.
“You can’t find auction items such as these at many fundraisers. Receiving the funding for the African Discovery Center will further enhance our educational mission,” says Krantz. “Proceeds will benefit such a worthy cause.”
The 8th annual Riverbanks ZOOfari will take place October 7 from 7:00 to 11:00 pm. The attire for the evening is safari or casual. Tickets are $75 for Riverbanks Society members and $85 for the general public. Call 803.779.8717, ext. 1601 to purchase tickets. To prolong the evening, Embassy Suites Hotel of Columbia is offering an overnight “Total ZOOfari” package. Please call 803.252.8700 for details.
