November 11 Bulb Sale Hosts Scores of Spring Bulbs

[Columbia, SC] - Riverbanks Botanical Garden will host its annual Fall Bulb Sale this Saturday from 9am to 2pm at the Visitors Center on the Terrace. Bulbs are hand-selected by Riverbanks horticulturists; therefore, garden enthusiasts will find a wide variety of unique and common spring bulbs at the sale.

“This year Riverbanks offers crinums, tulips, daffodils and other miscellaneous bulbs. These bulbs are sure to fill your spring beds with beautiful colors, textures and fragrances,” said Melodie Scott-Leach, director of horticulture at Riverbanks. “A new bulb being introduced to the annual sale is the popular Sparaxis, also known as the Harlequin Flower. Sparaxis has star shaped blooms and comes in a mix containing reds, coppers, whites, oranges and purples.”

The 5th annual bulb sale will offer a wide assortment of new selections as well as some old favorites. For the crinum lover, Riverbanks is offering the Crinum ‘Mystery’ for the first time. This crinum is smaller in stature than most crinums and has delicate pink flowers. The Narcissus ‘White Lion,’ a creamy white daffodil with yellow in the center is another new selection.

Riverbanks horticulturists will be on site to answer gardening questions and help gardeners select their bulbs. The staff can provide gardeners with tips such as where to store your bulbs before you plant them and what time of year is best to plant your bulbs. All of these bulbs have been featured in the Botanical Garden and they are guaranteed to work well in South Carolina’s climate.

After you finish shopping for your bulbs, visitors are encouraged to take some time to explore the Garden. The Botanical Garden has recently added ornamental grass borders, which feature 15 different grasses that are displayed along 6 common turf grasses. This aesthetically pleasing area showcases grasses that can be found throughout the Midlands. Visiting the Botanical Garden can even help spur design ideas for your own garden.

Riverbanks Botanical Garden is located off of Hwy. 378 in West Columbia. Visitors can also access the Garden through the Zoo. Shoppers are encouraged to come early since many bulbs go fast. Pre-orders can be picked up at the Garden ticket area at this time. Interested gardeners can also call 803.779.8717 for more information.
