[Columbia, SC] - Riverbanks is hosting a “party for the planet” and the animals in conjunction with Earth Day on Sunday, April 22. The festivities will kick off at 10am and last until 5pm. The celebration at Riverbanks will coincide with Party for the Planet festivities at 100 other participating zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

“Celebrating Earth Day at Riverbanks is a natural extension of our mission,” said Satch Krantz, executive director at Riverbanks. “Educating the public about the care and conservation of the environment is a daily commitment. The activities planned for Sunday are designed to further inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth.”

As part of the national celebration, visitors who come to the Zoo on Sunday are encouraged to bring in empty cardboard paper towel rolls or cereal boxes. In exchange, participants will receive a free animal conservation tattoo. Kid-friendly conservation activities will be hosted by the Riverbanks ZooTeens in Palmetto Plaza. Activities will range from building a toad abode to coloring an animal mask. “Party-goers” will learn about environment conservation and ways to make a difference in their own backyard.

People aren’t the only ones partying at the Zoo on Sunday. Enrichment activities for the animals will occur throughout the day. Elephants, baboons, gorillas and more will see, smell, touch and taste enrichment treats given to them by Riverbanks’ staff. Watch wildlife in action at scheduled events from 10am to 3:30pm. The schedule will be posted at the front gate and around the Zoo.

All Earth Day activities are free with regular zoo admission.
