[Columbia, SC] - Join Riverbanks on Saturday, April 19, as we celebrate Earth Day with a Party for the Planet to motivate visitors to take a closer look at ways they can make a positive impact on the environment. “Earth Day helps, but everyday matters,” said Heather Johnson, director of conservation education at Riverbanks. “It is important that the community understands that if we work together we can make an impact. The goal of Party for the Planet is to empower our visitors so they are compelled to take an active role in the continued care and conservation of the earth’s natural resources.”
From 10am to 3pm party-goers will engage in interactive and exciting educational activities designed to encourage the reduction, reuse and recycling of natural resources. The day will be filled with action and adventure: guests will have the opportunity to Pledge for the Planet, get an up close introduction to some of Riverbanks coolest party animals, participate in the Happy, Healthy Home art contest, discover what common items can be recycled at the Recycle Rally, find out what a “trash free” lunch looks like and plant a seed that they can take home and put right in their own backyard. In addition to these activities, timed animal enrichment encounters will be occurring throughout the park. Guests will watch penguins, grizzly bears, elephants and more as they interact with themed enrichment treats. These items are designed to stimulate the animals’ senses and encourage natural behaviors. The physical and mental stimulation brought about by these activities help maintain and enhance the health and well being of the animals. The enrichment schedule will be posted at the front gate and throughout the park. Guests who stop by one of the enrichment tables located outside of the Aquarium Reptile Complex (ARC) or the Birdhouse will receive a temporary tattoo featuring the animal of their choice. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden won’t be the only group hosting a Party for the Planet during the week of Earth Day. More than 100 zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) will be inspiring action, awareness and appreciation for the earth and its resources. All Earth Day activities are free with paid admission to the park.
