| More than 4,000 Plants Offered |
[Columbia, SC] - Growing season is in full bloom and Riverbanks Botanical Garden is offering more than 40 species of garden favorites totaling more than 4,000 plants at the annual Plant Sale on Saturday, April 26, 2008. The sale will run from 9am to noon in the Garden’s Growing Center located at the end of Seminole Drive in West Columbia. “Riverbanks' horticulture staff has handpicked employee and visitor favorites to be featured at this year’s plant sale,” said Andy Cabe, curator of horticulture. “We strive to provide local gardeners with an eclectic selection of plants that they may not find at current retailers. They are all plants that we have tested and know they will thrive in our humid climate.” Guests can expect to see a wide variety of cultivars including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, bulbs and antique roses, a Riverbanks favorite. Back by popular demand, the most desired item from last year, Colocasia ‘Coffee Cups’ elephant ear. This unique plant has a dark, nearly black stem and concave leaves which form the “coffee cups.” It can reach as high as six feet tall and is quite striking in a garden. New this year is the Solenostemon ‘Lazy Alligator’ a new Coleus hybrid that is being introduced by Riverbanks. This is the first-time offering of this annual, and it is sure to be favored by gardeners. Another new addition, Alpinia ‘Sun Spice,’ is a ginger with variegated leaves. This plant produces beautiful foliage. Most plants will range from $5 to $10 with proceeds benefiting Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. People who are set on particular plants should arrive early. Admission to the Plant Sale is free for those that arrive at the Seminole Drive entrance. For more information call 803.779.8717.
