| Zoo Community Saddened by the Loss of Montgomery the Hippo |
[Columbia, SC] - Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is sad to announce the loss of Montgomery the hippopotamus. On Tuesday, July 15, Montgomery was humanely euthanized following a physical examination. Montgomery had several chronic medical issues that seriously affected his quality of life and which had become difficult to control and treat. “Riverbanks has a commitment to provide our animals with the highest quality of treatment and care,” said Dr. Keith Benson, senior veterinarian at Riverbanks. “Montgomery’s health had been in a state of decline for the past several months, and the animal care staff exercised a number of options for treating an animal of his size and temperament. As things progressed, it became difficult to keep Montgomery comfortable and provide him with the quality of life he deserved.” The keeper, curatorial and veterinary staff felt that euthanizing him was the kind and appropriate option at that time. “Just as we celebrate the birth of the new lion cubs and flamingo chicks, we also mourn the death of Montgomery,” said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. “Monty held a special place in the hearts of many people throughout the community and he will be sorely missed.”
Montgomery was born at the Memphis Zoo on September 17, 1972, and was one of the original animals that had been at Riverbanks since 1974. There are two remaining original animals, a flamingo and a white-faced saki monkey.
